Why I Brought M43 OM System to the Sugar Bowl Instead of FF Canon

Now that I have a full set of full frame canon gear, and a set up I’d argue is perfect for covering NFL games, I surprised myself by still opting to bring my trusty ol’ micro four thirds Olympus/OM System to cover the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans.

Reason #3 Easy to Pack

Traveling for this bowl game and being an adamant life-long carry-on kind, I am packing everything in a single roller and small backpack. Going with Olympus allows me to bring three bodies with room to stuff in my clothes.

Reason #2 Versatile Lens Choice

While I still feel like choice can be more of a burden than a blessing, being able to bring three bodies and ,ultiple lenses is fantastic. With my canon set up, I can barely squeeze two bodies and three lenses.

Reason #1 Reliable Connectivity

This is ironic because the whole reason I invested in canon was for the connectivity.

However, in my experience at the Superdome, the WiFi is buggy. Last year Nancy and Rod were completely unable to connect when trying to FTP from camera.

Canon’s in-camera FTP is fantastic over Ethernet. But canon’s camera connect app leaves much to be desired. While it can operate with the camera still operating (unlike OM) it does not have a feature that allows for only ingesting selects, but rather you have to scroll through your whole take each time. And switching between FTP connection and camera connect, just has me worried that if connectivity isn’t working seamlessly, I’ll be so bogged down in the menu that I will miss the action on the field.

What's funny is that despite the camera-to-phone connection being reliable, the Wi-Fi was still enough of a problem, but thankfully, there were ethernet lines along the sideline - so I ended up ingesting camera to phone, then during time outs plugging my iPhone into an ethernet dongle and uploading via ethernet line. It worked, and while I don't regret bringing my Olympus/OM System gear, if I cover again next year, I plan to bring canon and take advantage of the ethernet lines to save a step and take advantage of true f/2.8 and larger file sizes. I would bring the 100-300mm f/2.8 and 24-105mm f/2.8 on R5 Mk II bodies which I believe to be the best option for football.

I might still bring an OM System body as my third camera with the fisheye and 17mm, maybe even 25mm so that I have something to walk around town with or the 1 or 2 stadium view photos where I want to be super wide.
