AI and Ethics

I posted about whether AI will be taking over our jobs, but what about the ethics of artificial intelligence?

Though I haven't delivered images to Getty in a while, I am still technically on the roster of Getty contributors. I received an email which outlines their policy. Since the links are public I thought I'd share:

GETTY IMAGES COMPANY POLICY on NON-MANIPULATION (Incorporating AI Generated Content) of EDITORIAL NEWS, SPORT, & ENTERTAINMENT PHOTOGRAPHY & VIDEO

As well as the

Leading Media Organizations Call for Global AI Policy to Protect Editorial Integrity

I think Getty is republishing this now that Adobe has made additional AI-power tools

AI can improve our workflow, but it should not be used to alerter the original context or authenticity of a photograph

Acceptable Changes

• Cropping

• Minor color adjustments/corrections

• Limited lightening or darkening

• Limited sharpening

• Removal of dust spots (caused by a dirty lens • or sensor)

• Converting a color image or video to black & white

• Removal of Red Eye (caused by Flash Photography)

• Limited stabilizing of footage

• Minor corrections to level the horizon of an image

Unacceptable Changes

• Adding objects or information that were not in the original photograph

• Deleting or obscuring objects or information that were visible in the original photograph

• Pixelation or blurring of faces to grant anonymity (unless instructed by local laws and then only with the approval of a senior editor)

• Extreme lightening, darkening, color and contrast adjustments using any editing software (e.g., making a gray sky blue, a blue sky orange, etc.)

• Creating an extreme silhouette from a correctly exposed photograph

• Do not intentionally contribute to, alter, or seek to alter or influence subjects or events

• The use of artificial intelligence software to generate or modify images

Even if you are not a Gerry Image contributor, I still think you might find this "best practices" useful to keep in mind

I used AI tools to make my background high-key white for marketing portraits, but these are for commercial-use portraits not editorial-only
