Elinchrom ONE for a Pool Portrait - Discovering the Umbrella Hole on Elinchrom FIVE
I started drafting the post before the session, already anticipating some of the pros and cons. I was all ready with my new deep umbrella, diffuser and sandbag alternative. Perfect for an outdoor session that requires a quick set up!
After waiting to be let in to the pool, I didn't have much time to set up. And when I did, I couldn't find the umbrella hole on the Elinchrom FIVE. I thought "oh no, is it SO designed to be used with other modifiers that it doesn't even HAVE an umbrella hole?! I was thinking maybe it was similar to how high-end cameras don't come with an embedded flash. "What an oversight and drawback" So, thankfully I had the Elinchrom ONE.
Unfortunately, the ONE isn't quite enough to overpower the sun, and I'm not familiar enough with the HSS to really optimize yet. But if you can compare how it would look without lighting - the ONE is certainly better than nothing!
Guess my FIVE debut will have to come another time. Maybe Cal will have cleaned the bottom of the pool by then too 🙈
Check It This is 100% my fault and makes me no better than the people who make me frustrated when they show up to a game with the highest-end camera and 400mm f/2.8 and don't know how to change the aperture. Another reminder to always test your gear at home first! How About You? Any new gear you were excited to try and then totally failed? Perhaps a new camera and you forgot to put the battery in? We've all been there! Side Note Jeff Chiu was there for AP. Since AP does not provide lighting to them, he just works with available light. And ya know what, sometimes that's all you need and it really forces creativity and seeing light. Comments
