49ers Full Season
Typically, I mark off days I’m unavailable and then take assignments as they come. And between the great pool of local freelancers, I’m not getting called for every game. So when AP Director of photography for the west coast, Marcio Sanchez asked if I could cover, I was anticipating looking at the schedule and confirming the handful of games I could cover, and hopefully getting my usual 4-5 games per season. But after confirming with my kids whether they wanted to celebrate their weekday birthdays on the Saturday or Sunday before/after their birthday, I realized I could do them all. But did I want to? I know how hard it is to hear my daughter say “why do you have to go to work?” But also how great it is when they get a full day with their dad. I know I could make more money with other agencies. But beyond ensuringthat that I think the company is paying fair for the industry, it’s not about the money. i could not cover the games at all. But as Lynsey Addario says “It’s what I do”… and to be fair, my job takes me away for a day, to the South Bay, not a month to a war zone. I told Marcio I was going to take a few days to confirm with him. After a day he called to check in. Normally it’s a yes/no. He wanted to understand my reservations. When I said it was the weight of me wanting them, but not knowing whether I’d really want ALL of them when season actually came, he offered me to just pick the ones I wanted and that he’d ask other freelancers to cover the rest I told him I’d look over the schedule and give him an answer by the end of the day. As I thought about it, I thought well, there are no back-to-back weekends, apart from the three-in-row Sept-Oct. So maybe I’ll skip the game on September 27, just to break it up. But then I thought, what’s the point of posting on one game. My kids will already be in a rhythm that this is what I do on the weekends. I also think, I will just leave SO early for the games to avoid traffic, that it often turns into a great work day, or at least a catch up day. Though I will miss Peter’s presence every game. So in honor of Peter Read Miller and my gratitude to be able to do what I love, not just as a mom, but in general, a a photographer. There are not many people who get to photograph NFL games as their job. There are fewer and fewer opportunities, and in so grateful to AP for offering me the opportunity to stay in the (career) field, and work on the (literal) field. Check It The only reason this opportunity has risen, is because of the unfortunate news that Godofredo Vasquez was laid off, making it so that two freelancers needed to be hired each game.
