My first outing with the 24-105mm was at a soccer game and the shallow depth of field and zoom range made it perfect for the starting eleven photo AND the action at the near goal. I also really enjoyed using it for basketball where I could get wider plays around the basket.
I thought it would replace my 24-105mm f/4, but given that it's (intentionally) the same size as a 70-200mm, I found that this is more of a dedicated action and event photography lens.
