Unsubscribe
If you are like me, you get countless emails each day. If you are also like me, you have filters set up and quickly swipe to delete emails you know you won't read. But do you actually unsubscribe. Or just kick the can down the road and plan to unsubscribe next time you get the email.
In reading Cal Newport's blog, I'm reminded how much email has gotten out of control. And how you have to keep in mind that each notification alert still draws away your attention. And if you are like many early adopter Gmail users, you're starting to realize your storage is not unlimited and all the pointless emails you mindless archived are catching up to you. Though also if you are Gmail user, your social and promotional emails go into folders. If you love getting promotional emails (my dad is in this category, I do not understand) I suggest signing up for these accounts with a separate email address. I have a sort of "burner" email that I've started to use. I'm also now committing to not just doing a mass delete but trying to prevent the email to begin with. Many of these companies have subscription options that they automatically opt you into, but you can opt out without deleting your account entirely.
Check It It's my own fault for ever putting my email out there to begin with :P Also, a pre-emptive apology in case I ever start sending a newsletter and filling up your inbox. Check In How's your inbox looking? Do you get thousands of promo emails, subscribe to a few newsletters, or are you an inbox zero kind of person. I encourage you this week, and indefinitely, to not just clean out your inbox by deleting, but prevent your inbox from filling up by committing to a month of not just swiping on your phone and clearing it (until the next promotion) but diligently unsubscribing from any emails which you know you won't access
